Information On Using A Choke Chain Collar
During training, certain dogs can sometimes benefit from having a choke chain collar on. This device is also occasionally called a chain dog collar. and it is a very simple reinforcement tool for responsible owners and trainers inadjusting your dog's leash behavior.
A choke chain collar is simply a length of chain with large rings on each end. It works by drawing the length of the chain through one loop, creating a circle. The width of the rings prevents the end from sliding through. The circle is then slipped over the dog's head and the loose end is attached to a leash held by the dog's walker.
Ideally the collar should only be used during training. When the dog shows bad leash behavior, a gentle amount of pressure on the chain causes it to tighten around the dog's neck. This is somewhat unpleasant, so the dog, with time, stops the bad behavior. This collar will also motivate dogs to walk beside their owner as speeding up or stopping quickly causes discomfort.
Another version of the choke collar is known as a prong collar. The length of chain has prongs, usually, but not always, with rubber tips on the side of the collar that rests against the dog's neck. With a prong collar the chain is pulled and the prongs tighten on the dog's neck. This type of collar is also known as a pinch collar. The use of these collars is controversial, and we agree that they should not be used on dogs that are prone to lunge. Dogs that make quick breaks for freedom can hurt themselves quite badly on a prong choke collar.
We do not recommend using these collars as full time collars. They are best used for obedience training only. They should also not be used with puppies. Puppies have frail throats, and the use of a choke chain collar can do some real damage. Remember choke collars are primarily used for dog training and obedience, Make sure that you get one that is not to loose and fits your dog's neck. We do not recommend using this as a full time collar.
Reward his, or her, learned good behavior with a less intrusive collar. A couple of great leash control collars are the head collar and the martingale collar.
Make it a fun walk for you and your loyal friend!
