What You Need to Know About the Elizabethan Collar
We all want our dogs to be healthy, but sometimes, accidents and injuries happen, and when they do, it is time to pull out that old staple, the Elizabethan dog collar! The Elizabethan dog collar has many names, but some of the most common include the recovery collar, the cone collar or simply the e-collar. These collars are fastened around the dog's head, putting the dog's face at the center of a cone pointed away from their bodies. These cones are light, and they are designed to prevent a dog from licking at its wound or disturbing its wound dressing.
When you are looking at wound recovery, making sure that your dog doesn't get in the way of it's own healing. A dog does not understand that a bandage is in place to prevent a wound from getting ripped open or dirty. All it knows is that there is something foreign stuck to its body and its first instinct is to tear at the bandage until it is off. Then the licking starts!
A dog recovery collar is light weight, and you can get one from your veterinarian. But there are more inexpensive options available. A good e-collar needs to be light enough that your dog does not get tired wearing it, but sturdy enough that he, or she, will not be able to get around it and get to the wound. Some dogs dislike the collar intensely when it is first put on them, but most of them simply get used to it within a few days or even a few hours. If you have a dog that is relatively calm , you might be able to get by with a very light collar made of thick paper rather than one made of fabric or plastic
When you are looking for a vet approved collar that will keep your dog from hurting itself, remember that the e-collar follows the same rules as other collars do. You should be able to fit two fingers between your dog's neck and the collar itself. This will prevent the collar from hurting your dog's neck or causing breathing issues.
The Elizabethan era produced dress collars that were very wide and this is where these modern collars get their name. If you want to make sure that your dog recovers well without doing itself further harm, this dog recovery collar is the right choice!
